AMAZON SNAFFLES UP SMART DOORBELL MAKER RING

Knock, Knock. Who’s there?

Amazon won’t come a ‘knocking on anyone’s doorbell. Not when it can ring instead.

And there’ll be a lot of ringing doorbells after Amazon’s recent announcement that it's gobbled up smart door chime maker Ring, for a cool US$1 billion.

If this sounds like a lot of moolah for a bunch of clever doorbells, think again. Amazon isn’t the biggest shark in the online retail pond for no reason.

When it looked at Ring’s potential to fill its company till with bundles of money via home security and in-house delivery services, the sound resonating through Amazon’s corridors was “Kerching.”

A Ring spokesperson has reportedly told the media:

We’ll be able to achieve even more by partnering with an inventive, customer-centric company like Amazon. We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighbourhoods.

Amazon has a history of leaving its takeover targets such as Zappos and Twitch alone to work at doing what these brands do best.

It’s expected that Ring will also be kept at arm’s length allowing it to operate separately from Amazon’s core online business.

The new deal with Ring is one of Amazon’s most expensive acquisitions to date.

The move to acquire ring signals Amazon’s desire to acquire a home security company. The move compliments its new relationships with lock makers Kwikset and Yale for its in-home delivery service.

Amazon’s purchase of Ring was not unexpected. It had previously worked with Ring using its Alexa Fund that was set up to plough money into in companies that can help develop and grow Amazon’s Alexa Voice technology.
